In automotive and bicycle contexts, a cable end (or cable crimp) is a small cap, typically made of aluminum or plastic, that is installed on the end of inner cables, such as brake or shift cables. Its primary function is to prevent the cable from fraying once it has been cut to length. Frayed cables can lead to issues in cable performance, safety concerns, and a generally untidy appearance.

Cable Ends in Bicycles

• Material: Aluminum is most common, providing a lightweight yet durable solution, though plastic can also be used for lighter-duty applications.
• Function: Once a cable is cut, the end is prone to fraying, which can cause the individual strands to unravel, creating issues when the cable needs to be threaded or adjusted. Installing a cable end keeps the cable intact, secure, and easy to handle.
• Application: These are typically crimped onto the cable end using a pair of pliers to ensure they stay in place.

For the outer cable sheath (housing), a ferrule is used to protect the end from wear and to ensure a neat fit where the housing meets the brake or shift lever. The ferrule provides a smooth, solid endpoint, preventing the housing from collapsing or splitting, which helps maintain consistent cable tension and responsiveness in the system.
