A “test pilot” is often used colloquially to refer to someone who test-drives vehicles without any real intention of purchasing them. They might respond to advertisements or visit dealerships to experience the feel of driving different cars, but they don’t have genuine interest in buying. This behavior can sometimes be frustrating for sellers or dealerships who invest time and effort in facilitating test drives.
In contrast, a “tire kicker” is someone who may examine a vehicle extensively, often asking detailed questions, inspecting various aspects of the car, but ultimately may not commit to buying it. While both “test pilots” and “tire kickers” may not result in a sale, the former is more interested in the driving experience, while the latter may focus more on the vehicle’s condition and features.
In aviation, a “test pilot” is indeed a highly skilled individual who is responsible for testing and evaluating experimental aircraft, new designs, or modifications to existing aircraft. They play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and performance of aircraft before they are certified for use by pilots and passengers.
