S4WD (Selectable Four-Wheel Drive)

S4WD stands for Selectable Four-Wheel Drive, a drivetrain system that allows the driver to manually engage or disengage four-wheel drive (4WD) as needed. In normal conditions, the vehicle operates in two-wheel drive (usually rear- or front-wheel drive), which conserves fuel and reduces drivetrain wear. When additional traction is required—such as on snow, mud, or off-road terrain—the driver can switch to four-wheel drive mode, either through a lever, switch, or electronic control.

Key features of S4WD systems include:

  • Driver control: The driver decides when to activate or deactivate 4WD.
  • Modes: Typically includes 2H (two-wheel high), 4H (four-wheel high), and sometimes 4L (four-wheel low for extreme conditions).
  • Applications: Common in pickup trucks, SUVs, and off-road vehicles where occasional 4WD use is beneficial.

This system contrasts with full-time 4WD or AWD (All-Wheel Drive) systems, which engage all wheels continuously or automatically.
