Saddlebag

A saddlebag is a large storage bag, typically used on motorcycles, bicycles, or horses, that hangs down from either side of the saddle or rear mounting point. Saddlebags are designed to carry gear, tools, or personal items and are especially useful for touring, commuting, or long-distance riding.

Key Features:

  • Configuration:
    • Single saddlebag: Mounted on one side.
    • Paired saddlebags: One on each side of the rear wheel or saddle, often connected by a yoke or mounted with brackets.
  • Materials:
    • Leather – Traditional and stylish, often used in cruiser or classic motorcycle setups.
    • Textile (nylon, canvas) – Lightweight and weather-resistant, common in modern touring or adventure gear.
    • Hard cases (plastic or metal) – Lockable and durable, used in high-capacity or rugged touring setups.
  • Mounting:
    • Can be thrown over the rear rack, attached with straps, or bolted directly to custom racks or mounting systems.

Alternate Term:

  • Panniers: A common synonym, especially in the context of bicycle touring, where the bags are typically used for carrying supplies on long rides.

Saddlebags are a practical accessory for increasing storage capacity while maintaining balance and accessibility during rides.
