SA is an obsolete API (American Petroleum Institute) engine oil classification that designates a straight mineral oil with no additives. It was originally intended for use in early gasoline and diesel engines operating under extremely mild service conditions, where the engines experienced minimal stress and the need for modern protective additives (such as detergents, anti-wear agents, or oxidation inhibitors) was not necessary.
Key Characteristics:
- No Additives: SA oils are pure base oils without chemical enhancements.
- Limited Protection: Offers no protection against wear, corrosion, oxidation, or sludge formation.
- Intended Use: Suitable only for vintage or antique engines where the manufacturer specifically recommends SA oil.
- Superseded by SB: The SA classification was replaced by the SB category, which includes some mild anti-wear additives.
- Not for Modern Engines: Modern engines require advanced oil formulations, such as those classified under SM, SN, or SP, to handle higher temperatures, tighter tolerances, and longer service intervals.
Warning: Using SA oil in modern or improperly specified engines can result in significant engine damage, due to its lack of protective properties.
