Salient Pole
In an electric motor or generator, a salient pole refers to a design where the stator or rotor poles are large, protruding poles with concentrated windings wrapped around each pole. These poles are typically spaced at regular intervals and extend outward from the core, creating distinct magnetic poles. This is in contrast to non-salient (or cylindrical) pole designs, where the windings are distributed in slots around a smooth rotor. Salient pole motors are commonly used in applications requiring low-speed and high-torque, such as hydroelectric generators and synchronous machines.
