Bag Molding

Bag molding is a technique used in the manufacturing of composite materials, where a flexible membrane (the bag) is used to apply pressure to a thermosetting composite laminate or sandwich component during curing. This method allows for the production of strong and lightweight composite structures.

Process Overview:

  1. Flexible Membrane (Bag):
  • Purpose: The bag acts as a pressure vessel to apply uniform pressure, typically around one atmosphere, to the composite material.
  • Material: Usually made of a flexible material like silicone or nylon that can conform to the shape of the mold and withstand the curing temperature.
  1. Curing Process:
  • Composite Material: Typically a thermosetting resin combined with reinforcement materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, or Kevlar.
  • Mold: An open mold where the composite laminate or sandwich component is placed.
  • Pressure Application:
    • Vacuum Bag Molding: In this method, the pressure is generated by evacuating the air from inside the bag, creating a vacuum that presses the composite against the mold.
    • Pressure Bag Molding: Here, pressure is applied by pressurizing the outer surface of the bag with air or another fluid. This method is less common than vacuum bag molding but can be used depending on the requirements of the composite structure.

  • Consistency: Provides uniform pressure distribution over the entire surface of the laminate or component.
  • Quality: Helps in achieving high-quality finishes and structural integrity.
