Bell Housing

  • Definition: The metal covering around the flywheel and clutch in a manual transmission or around the torque converter assembly in an automatic transmission. Sometimes called clutch housing.
  • Purpose: Protects the components of the clutch or torque converter and provides a mounting point for the transmission to the engine.
  • Material: Typically made from cast aluminum or steel to provide strength and durability.
  • Function: Ensures proper alignment of the transmission and engine, and shields the moving parts from debris and external damage.
