Sand

  1. To smooth or clean a surface by rubbing with sandpaper. This process is typically done with hand tools like sandpaper and blocks, unlike grinding, which usually refers to power tools such as angle grinders.
  2. Loose, unconsolidated accumulations of detrital sediment, primarily consisting of rounded grains of quartz. In soil mechanical analysis, sand is classified as having a grain size between 0.06 mm and 2.0 mm.
  3. To apply a thin layer of sand or sand and salt to icy road surfaces in order to increase traction. This is a common practice in colder regions during winter months to improve road safety.
